The FAA recently published an interim regulation regarding model aircraft registration, which has caused a great deal of upset and confusion in the model aviation community.
We would like to provide our customers with some information and guidance. Many of the models we sell and support do not have to be registered, but many others do. Here is a quick overview of what must be registered:
- Any model which flies and:
- is Radio Controlled
- weighs more than 250 grams (0.55 pounds, or 8.8 ounces)
- flown for hobby or recreational purposes
Models weighing less than 55 pounds an be registered using the FAA’s online registration system. Models which weigh 55 pounds or more must be registered using the FAA’s paper registration process.
If you need more information, please see the FAA’s registration information page.
Community based organizations like the Academy of Model Aeronautics are working with the FAA and through the courts to try and eliminate, or at least reduce the impact of, these new regulations.
As things develop, we will keep this page updated with the latest news and information about the registration process and how it impacts our customers.
